Description:

    Dual Coding Theory was proposed by Allan Paivio (1986) in which verbal and non-verbal processing are given equal weight and importance.  "Human cognition is unique in that it has become specialized for dealing simultaneously with language and with nonverbal objects and events.  Moreover, the language system is peculiar in that it deals directly with linguistic input and output (in the form of speech or writing) while at the same time serving a symbolic function with respect to nonverbal objects, events, and behaviors." (Paivio pg. 53)  Dual Coding Theory's foundation is based on the assumption that these two cognitive subsystems, verbal and nonverbal, are a requirement for recognition enhancement.

  In Figure 1 the verbal process is represented with logogens while imagens represent the nonverbal process.  Logogens are pictured in a hierarchical structure which are further organized by associations.  They function sequentially, like the proper syntax in a sentence.  One concept or idea precedes the next.  Since the process is verbal, mental images may not always be formulated so the information is processed through association.  For example hearing the word dog may not create a mental image.  On the other hand, imagens are shown on the nonverbal process as parts of a whole where further information can be extrapolated.  They function synchronously or in parallel.  The example here is if you were shown a picture of a dog, your mind would immediately recognize image and pair it with the word dog.


Experimentation:

  In an experiment participants were asked to identify which of two items were rounder.  These items were presented as words, pictures, or word-picture pairs.  If for example the two items were a peach and a goblet the participants were given pictures or words.  The study concluded that the response time regarding word pairs were the slowest, while those with pictures had the fastest response times.

Conclusion:

  This theory bridges the gap between what would be considered visual or verbal learners.  The theory dictates that both are a requirement for learning, however recollection is strongest when the learner is presented with a picture instead of a word.  In the classroom this would require visual aids to help students draw connections and deepen their understanding.

Gagne's Nine Events Of Instruction Presented By Rosendo Molina

This blog will describe in detail the instructional model know as Gagne’s Nine Events Of Instruction.
First off, Gagne’s Nine Events Of Instruction is a model that is based off ideas stemming from the Cognitivist Theory of learning Cognitivist Theory is based upon the belief that learning can be maximized via an approach that is chiefly centered upon the mental processes that enable effective learning.  Additionally, it posits that learning is chiefly facilitated through a structured approach that utilizes graphic organizers, schema, links to prior learning, and other cognitive mechanisms in order to transfer learning from short term to long term memory.  In this theory, the teacher is the primary distributor of knowledge via a rather didactic approach to instruction.

Linda Harasim stated that cognitivism is “interested in theorizing and modeling the mental structures and processes that could explain human behavior” in order to “devise accurate models…to create and/or prescribe learning events to address more complex behaviors, such as problem solving and decision making” (2012, p. 58).

Thus, students are tasked to assimilate knowledge chiefly via the cognitive powers of their intellectual abilities.  Moreover, this process is enhanced and facilitated by graphic organizers and other highly structured, brain-based strategies.

Gagne’s Nine Events Of Instruction was created by Robert M. Gagne (1916-2002).  It incorporates the above ideals of Cognitivist Theory and it is primarily teacher centered and highlights the belief that learning transpires in the context of effective cognitive-based strategies and routines.

Gagne’s Nine Events Of Instruction consist of the following steps:   

1) Gain Attention: Gain students’ attention so they will be focused upon the lesson at hand.  This can be achieved via an engaging YouTube videos or graphics of interest on the whiteboard in order to pique students’ interest ect.

2) Inform Learners Of The Objectives: This can be achieved by orally stating or explicitly writing on the board the learning objectives.

3) Stimulate Recall Of Prior Learning: Help students to recall pertinent prior knowledge in order to build upon that existing foundation/schema.  This can be done via a class brainstorm/discussion or a journal writing ect.

4) Present The Content: Present the lesson content utilizing diverse strategies in order to appeal to differing learning styles.  This can be accomplished using PowerPoints, readings, computer simulations and other computer software, YouTube videos, lectures etc.

5) Provide Learning Guidance:  Provide detailed instructions, modeling, and other support mechanisms so students can correctly learn in an assisted manner.

6) Elicit Performance (Practice): Students apply and demonstrate their gained knowledge via individual and group activities.

7) Provide Feedback: Provide feedback to students regarding what they are doing well and what they need to improve in. This may take the form of teacher feedback or peer feedback or self-assessment.

8) Assess Performance: Use a variety of assessments i.e. tests, quizzes, essays, and projects etc to assess student performance.

9) Enhance Retention and Transfer: This is done to permanently transfer lesson content from short term memory to long term memory. This can be achieved by further repetitive practice, metacognitive journal entries regarding the importance of the lesson learned, a game based on the lesson content, and other fun activities.

The following is a practical example of Gagne’s Nine Events Of Instruction:

1) Gain Attention:
Watch a short (yet fun) YouTube video about the importance of rounding whole numbers to any place value.

2) Inform Learners Of The Objective:
Write the following Common Core standard on the board and read aloud with the class - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.A.3 “Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.”

3) Stimulate Recall Of Prior Learning:
Students have already learned how to round multi-digit whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 in the 3rd grade.  Therefore, remind them of this fact by writing some numbers on the board like 1659 and 35498 and 500001. Then ask for volunteers to raise their hand to show to the class how to round those numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

4) Present The Content:
Show a Khan Academy video about how to round whole numbers to any place value.  Next, write several large numbers on the board and model how to round to the nearest 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000.

Next, model how to round whole numbers to any place value.

5) Provide Learning Guidance:
Provide students with a written set of directions that shows how to round whole numbers to any place value.  Next, have students separate into groups of 4 and provide 5 large whole numbers for them to round to specified place values.  Walk around the class and answer questions.  Lastly, review the answers as a whole class and answer questions.

6) Elicit Performance (Practice):
Ask students to remain in groups of 4.  Then write several whole numbers on the board and ask them to work together to round to the nearest 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000.

Then pass out a worksheet for students to work on individually so they can practice rounding whole numbers to any place value.

7) Provide Feedback:
Review answers to group problems.  Then, have students exchange papers & grade each other’s paper as the teacher reviews the answers on the board to the worksheet.  Next, students hand back the paper and provide feedback to their peer.    

8) Assess Performance:
Have students write in their journal how to round whole numbers to any place value.  Next, have them individually complete a small quiz.

9) Enhance Retention and Transfer:
Students play a fun computer game that involves rounding.

Description

Goal based scenarios is a learning style that was thought up by Roger Schank after many years of studies.  It essentially combines learning by doing with case based learning. According to Schank, “[t]he intent of goal based learning is to provide motivation, a sense of accomplishment, a support system and a focus on skills rather than facts.” In a way, I kind of follows natural learning. Within this learning theory there are seven different elements that help guide it along the way to accomplishment.

7 Elements of based learning

1.       Learning goals- What is the student working towards?

2.       Mission- motivation

3.       Cover Story- motivational story/ experience

4.       Role- Part that the student will play.

5.       Scenario operations- what activities will the student to do reach the goal?

6.       Resources- organized and accessable information

7.       Feedback – instructor must provide it right away so as to allow student to continue to work towards their goal.

Connections to Other learning theories

After reading about and carefully reviewing Goal based scenarios it is easy to see how it is related to the constructivist theory by Jean Piaget. In his theory Piaget points outs that people learn best by making connections with real life situations that have happened to them.  That pairs perfectly with Schank saying goal based scenarios is part leaning by doing.

Criticism 

Some believe that Schank has some outlandish outlooks in regards to education.  He stated that students aren’t taught to get self-satisfaction but rather they are taught to get extrinsic rewards.  He believes that the assessment based society that we live in has led children to believe the main goal of learning is to simply please the teacher and to get a good test grade. It isn’t hard to believe that him saying that would ruffle a couple of feathers with educators who believe the complete opposite.

Conclusion

I feel like this theory can be very useful in the classroom and in the education system as a whole.  Shank puts a huge emphasis on students mastering a skill than passing a test. With the rise of Common Core I feel like that emphasis on mastering skills is extremely important and can come in a great deal of use.  This theory seems to put more power into the hand of the student as well as providing them a huge sense of accomplishment through immediate feedback.

What is Reciprocal Teaching?

Reciprocal Teaching is an activity in which the students become the teachers. With teacher guidance, students learn how to lead discussions using strategies such as predicting, reading, questioning, clarifying and summarizing. When students become comfortable with Reciprocal Teaching, teachers allow them to lead their group into a new way of learning. Reciprocal Teaching is designed to help students advance on their comprehension and reading levels by allowing them to practice their strategies. 

Family Tree:
Reciprocal Teaching is most closely related to the Constructivism Theory. Accordion to the University of Sydney, "constructivism is a learning theory found in psychology which explains how people might acquire knowledge and learn." This means that students through Reciprocal Teaching may gain new experiences and knowledge because they are learning from a new point of view. Due to students leading their own groups, they will acquire knowledge from each other at their specific learning stage. 


Application:
Due to Reciprocal Teaching being such an important activity in our students learning, we need to apply it in steps. First as a class, the teacher and students select a short story to read. Together, students and the teacher predict what is going to happen on the story. After, the teacher reads the story to them and allows them to ask questions which she later clarifies. Finally, as a class, they resume the story and decide if their prediction was close to what really happened. Once students have gone through this process and feel comfortable, the teacher reviews the process with them and helps them understand what “reciprocal teaching” is. At this point, the teacher will create groups of no more than four and allow the students to read and analyze the story together.
